The definitive history of Joseph Smith is still Fawn Brodie’s _No Man Knows My History_. She updated it in the 1970s. It’s a good place to start, especially if you were raised in the church as I was, because it debunks the sanitized version of church history were were taught as children. It also happens to be an engaging and entertaining read.

Been in your shoes. I considered the ministry, and in due time after leaving the church, I became an ordained Arch Druid. Ha! the irony! Today I am practicing neither. Still spiritual, but naturally so.

I also saw a post by Ken Ham, a minister of some kind, blathering about that same natural man from the biblical perspective (bad, bad, not capable of good, doomed to hell by being born, bad) and his perspective on reason from the Biblical point of view: “My way or none at all.” Such shit.

I suspect that there are no tombs of Jesus and Mary, because there is no real evidence that the stories are authentic. Those who believe don’t ask for evaluation of evidence, and we who know better spend too much time explaining away nonsense. We know where the stories originated, who perpetrated the fraud, how violent stories of hell, crusades inquisition, and jihad cause the fearful and weak to go along to get along.

I got the black leather-bound gilt-edged version that looks like a Bible, and keep it in the living room for unsuspecting visitors to discover.

You have left out some important bits. For one thing, the golden plates were translated using (in part) the same ‘seeing stone’ that Smith used when he was engaged in ‘treasure seeking,’ a sham service which bilked money from unsuspecting farmer by charging them to look for buried treasure on their land. Smith and his father were both charged, convicted, and fined for fraud for these activities, and the ‘seeing stone’ is mentioned in the court transcripts. Smith admitted to using the same stone to translate the plates and…..

…the scrolls! After founding his community in Kirtland, Smith encountered a traveling exhibit of Egyptian artifacts, and having gathered money from the congregation, he purchased the entire exhibit. The purchase included a few mummies (who knows what became of them, after they were doubtless baptized as Mormons), but it also included several papyrus scrolls. It was from these scrolls, which Smith claimed contained writings by Abraham, that the doctrine of plural marriage (in the tradition of Abraham and Sarah, after all!) was derived. The entire thing became the ‘Pearl of Great Price,’ the companion text to the Book of Mormon which came from the plates.

The scrolls, like the gold plates, vanished. But here’s the brilliant part: the scrolls turned up in 1966 in a box in the Metropolitan Museum. There were translated by people who actually know what they are doing, and they say nothing even close to what Smith claimed. Nevertheless, the Mormons insist that they do!

A few troublesome things regarding the mormon history:

1) The Mountain Meadows Massacre. (where a group of Mormons led by a relative of Brigham Young dressed up like Native Americans and killed a caravan of peaceful families trying to make it to California)

2) The REAL reason Joseph Smith got Tarred and Feathered in Missouri

3) The totally bullshit delay to accept African Americans into their church until the pressure of the civil rights movement became to heavy. (and even though they can get the priesthood now. it is still part of their doctrine that ‘dark skinned’ people are the descendants of Kane and the only way they can enter heaven is as a slave)

This is only three, but a fascinating Start to reading about a pretty crazy history of an equally crazy faith. (one that most of my family belongs to…
